Are You Ready To Run?

Brian Calkins - NSCA-CPT, ACE | Cincinnati, Ohio | May 14, 2008

Have you ever thought of running a 5K, 10K, Half or Full Marathon?

For anyone who has ever wanted to run a marathon…or just get some extra cardio in, beginning Tuesday, May 20th we are forming a running group (or power walking, jogging, etc., group).

Each week we’ll be meeting at Crossroads Church at 6:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an individualized-paced combination of walking/jogging or easy jog for a given time period. Then on Saturday mornings we’ll meet at the HealthStyle Fitness Studio at 8am for a distance walk/jog or run. Each week we’ll slowly progress and build on the previous week. In the first few weeks of training, plan on 20 – 30 minutes of training time for each session.

If you cannot participate on Tue/Thu, you can still join the group. Each week I will be emailing the training routine to everyone in the group – so you can follow it on your own or join us for any of the group sessions as your schedule allows.

Over the next year we will be progressively adding time and distance. On July 12th we’ll do our first 5K (about 3 miles), then in late August, early September we’ll do a 10K (just over 6 miles). On October 19th we’ll do a half marathon (13.1 miles after 5 months of training) in Columbus. We'll then reduce the training schedule slightly during the holidays to account for travel and other seasonal events, picking back up in January. And then on Sunday, May 3rd, 2009 those who want to complete the Flying Pig marathon will have the opportunity.

This schedule will easily allow everyone who wants to complete any of the events (5K, 10K, Half and Full Marathon) plenty of preparation to succeed.

If you want to join the group to train for a 5K only, there is no obligation to go any further. At each step of the 1-year plan, you have the option to continue or take pride in your achievement up to that point. Our group is designed to help you get some extra cardio in…and prepare for any of these events. There is no pressure involved at all – just an opportunity to get your heart thumping!!

After some consideration, we've decided that the running group is currently only available to active clients of HealthStyle Fitness. In the future we may open the program up to the public at large with a nominal fee based structure. For now, it's a value added service free to all clients, to allow for additional cardiovascular exercise and to support a fitness endeavor of major significance.
